چکیده

The capacity of heterozygous yellow-lethal (Aya) and brown (aa) male mice to induce the Bruce effect was investigated. The proportion of SJL/J females showing a failure of implantation when exposed to males of either genotype was 80 %, whereas only 20 % of the control females not so exposed showed pregnancy failure. One-half of the females whose pregnancy had been blocked as a result of exposure to either the Aya or aa male mice (50 % and 55 %, respectively) ovulated within 7 to 8 days after the initial mating. Results are discussed in regard to the hypothesis that the neuroendocrine mechanisms involved in pregnancy blocking and synchrony of oestrus are not qualitatively different.

Restorative Effect of Vitamin E on some Immunological Parameters of Sub-Lethal γ-Irradiated BALB/c Mice

Elevated amount of the free radicals due to ionizing radiation causes deteriorating damage on immune system. Therefore, we made attempts to investigate the protective effect of vitamin E (vit-E), a biological antioxidant in BALB/c mice, so as to find an affordable prophylactic supplementation for individuals who are at risk. Several groups of mice were selected and exposed to sub-lethal g -irra...

Declining fertility in the lethal yellow mouse is related to progressive hyperleptinemia and leptin resistance.

Mice possessing the lethal yellow mutation (C57BL/6J A(y)/a) become obese and develop hyperleptinemia and leptin resistance as they age. To determine the relationship between altered leptin physiology and reproductive function in these mice, we compared body weight (BW), serum leptin concentration, ovulation rate, and in vitro blastocyst development among 120- and 180-d-old lethal yellow and bl...

Waglerin-1 selectively blocks the epsilon form of the muscle nicotinic acetylcholine receptor.

Neonatal mice resist the lethal effect of Waglerin-1. Because Waglerin-1 blocks the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor of mature end-plates, the appearance of lethality may result from the epsilon- for gamma-subunit substitution. In support of this hypothesis, adult knockout (KO) mice lacking the gene coding for the epsilon-subunit resist the lethal effect of Waglerin-1. In contrast, heterozygous...

Influence of Certain Color Mutations on Body Size in Mice, Rats, and Rabbits.

HIS paper is a further contribution to a series of studies on size inT heritance in mice begun some years ago a t the Bussey Institution of Harvard University by my colleagues and myself and designed to throw light on the question how particular mutant genes affect the growth of the body and so influence adult body size. In previous studies it was found that the gene for brown pigmentation and ...

Survival advantage associated with heterozygous factor V Leiden mutation in patients with severe sepsis and in mouse endotoxemia.

Sepsis is associated with systemic inflammation, coagulopathy, and disrupted protein C (PC) pathway function. The effect of prothrombotic polymorphism, factor V Leiden (Arg506Gln; FV Leiden), was examined in a large clinical trial (PROWESS) of severe sepsis and a mouse endotoxemia model. In PROWESS, 4.1% (n = 65) of patients were heterozygous FV Leiden (VL+/-) carriers. The 28-day mortality was...
